MUSIC BEGINS AT 11 AM
For the 11th year, the Huntington Lighthouse Preservation Society presents the Huntington Lighthouse Music Fest. This event, held each Labor Day Weekend, is the ONLY Music Festival in the WORLD held on Top of a Working Lighthouse in the Middle of the Water!
This year is the 105th Anniversary of the Huntington Lighthouse and the 11th Anniversary of the Lighthouse Musicfest!
The Lighthouse Musicfest was started in 2006 to increase awareness of the Huntington Lighthouse plight and to bring a unique FUNdraising event to the Long Island boating community.
The festival is held annually on Labor Day weekend and attendance has grown to over 1,100 boats with over 12,000 attendees attending by yacht, boat, kayak, canoe, inner-tube, or any other mode of water transportation they find to reach the lighthouse! Boaters are drawn from New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island and New Jersey!!
Bands play from the roof of the Lighthouse to an anchorage of boats that stay from
11 am til dusk.
Huntington Harbor, being centrally located off the North Shore of Long Island, is the perfect place for a boating event of this size. Huntington is a thriving, growing community, that has a large population of boating enthusiasts. The Marinas, Yacht Clubs, Boating Magazines and other businesses that cater to the mariners of Long Island have jumped on board in record numbers to help the Preservation Society make this event the best water event in the area!
“The Lighthouse Music Fest is something we look forward to every year! We have been waiting for so long for an event to be based around the boating community on Long Island and we finally have one! We can’t wait to see what they come up with for us every year!” R. Signali, Huntington
…and from one of our sponsors:
“The Huntington Lighthouse Music Fest is a one-of-a-kind event. As far as events go, the enthusiasm of the community, the excitement that surrounds the event each year and the return on our investment are unparalleled. Everyone wants to be involved!!” K. Coneys’, Coneys Marine
The Huntington Lighthouse Preservation Society , Inc .(formerly, Save Huntington’s Lighthouse, Inc.) was formed in 1985 by concerned citizens to prevent the demolition of the Lloyd Harbor Light Station and replace it with an automated steel tower by the United States Coast Guard. We were one of the first groups to take over an offshore lighthouse and keep it from extinction. The Lighthouse has since been saved, but the maintenance and ongoing preservation work continues.
The objectives of the organization are to restore, preserve and maintain the historic Lighthouse listed on the National Historic Register of Historic Places. Our all volunteer
staff is passionate, and this year they are working hard to raise the over $200,000 to match the New York State Department of Parks And Historic Preservation Grant to do the much-needed major foundation repairs and add additional Rip Rap to surround the Lighthouse. The organization is dedicated to the ongoing preservation of the interior and exterior and preservation of the Lighthouse for public use as an educational and historic resource while maintaining this active navigational aid.
The Huntington Lighthouse is so important to the community that several companies
and organizations, including the Town of Huntington and the Chamber of Commerce,
use its likeness to represent them.
• Redistribution and addition of Rip Rap (rocks around the base)
• Repairs to the concrete foundation and upper structure of concrete
• Replace/repair deteriorating windows
• Scrape, sand, repair metal railings
• Re-shore, repair concrete decks
• Small miscellaneous projects-cleaning, painting
• Creation of visual/educational aids for visitors
• Extensive roof repairs
This year, the Lighthouse Preservation Society is incredibly concerned about the rip-rap surrounding the lighthouse itself. After years of pounding surf, the rip-rap is in dire need of replenishment. All funds raised by the Music Fest and other events throughout the year go towards repair and maintenance of the lighthouse.
